The Osceola Volunteer Fire Department and Osceola Rescue Squad responded to a hay bale fire on June 12, 2006 upon arrival the department found a trailer full of round bales ablaze. The owner of the trailer already unhitched it from the tractor saving the tractor from any damage. The Stromsburg Volunteer Fire Department was called in for water and the department sprayed water onto the bales as a tractor removed them from the trailer. The bales where a total loss and the trailer received minimal damage. Less than a month later Milt had a large bale pile catch on fire as a result from a train catching grass on fire. That day Osceola, Stromsburg, Shelby and Rising City fought blazes that stretched for 3-4 miles before the train was stopped.
