The O.V.F.D. held a practice burn in Osceola on 4/29/2005.
Scott and Fran Wieseman purchased the house and allowed the fire department to use it for training.  Shelby and Stromsburg attended the burn with both departments bringing trucks.  Interior attacks along with ventilation were practiced  that morning.  The house ran close to some power lines so when it came time to take down the structure a lot of care and caution had to be taken.  The power lines at the scene were isolated and de-enegized.  The O.V.F.D. would like to thank Scott and Fran for the use of the structure,  The departments that participated in the drills and Polk County Rural Public Power District for the line work done prior to the burn.
Attack and back up lines put into place before bottom fire is ignited.  This is after upstairs rooms have been burned out and overhauled.
Fire is going and two instructors and two students are inside to practice attacks.  There is also always two firefighters packed and on back up lines as well as a safety officer with tags.
A view from outside when we are inside practicing attacks.
Firefighters are now outside and it is time to let the house down.
Power lines at front need to be protected from heat. Holes are cut in back roof and the fire is fueled at the back to burn back out first.
A view from the back side. as it is fully en-gulfed in flames.
A view from the side. as it is fully en-gulfed in flames.
Water curtains are placed on structures that are close to the fire and ran on the building until the heat danger is gone.
A view from the front. The back and majority of the heat is gone and the wire are O.K. the burn is a success.
